In Excel, the SUM formula is used to add up numbers in a range of cells. Its syntax is straightforward:
=SUM(number1, [number2], …)

Here’s a breakdown of the components:

number1, number2, and so on are the arguments or cell references that contain the numbers you want to sum together.
The square brackets around number 2 indicate that this argument is optional. You can include up to 255 individual arguments or cell references in the formula.
For example, if you want to sum the values in a range of cells from A1 to A5, you’d use the formula like this:
=SUM(A1:A5)
You can also manually input numbers separated by commas within the formula, like:
=SUM(10, 20, 30, 40)
If you want to sum non-contiguous cells or ranges, you can do so by separating each range or cell reference with a comma:
=SUM(A1:A5, C1:C5, E1:E5)

This formula will sum the values in cells A1 to A5, C1 to C5, and E1 to E5.
